The breathing and relaxation practices of yoga may help to reduce the symptoms of depression, according to new research. Participants with mild to moderate depression were randomly put into one of two groups. The first group did two 90-minute sessions of yoga a week. The other, a control group, learned about the philosophy and history of yoga, but didn’t do it. After 8 weeks, the yoga group had greater reduction in symptoms and were more likely to achieve remission of their depression. The breathing techniques, relaxation, mindfulness and physical activity
may help trigger the benefits in mood.
