Evidence is accumulating that confirms that eating a Mediterranean diet may help slow brain
shrinkage that comes with age. A study of about 1,000 older adults found that those who most
closely followed a Mediterranean diet lost much less brain volume (according to brain scans)
compared to those who adhered the least to the diet. Learning a new language or how to play
a musical instrument, or doing puzzles may also help preserve the brain. Also, those who exercise
regularly in middle age have less brain shrinkage 20 years later. Tai chi was even found
to build brain volume.
