Protein, Muscle, and Mobility

Loss of muscle can often be a problem as we age. Eating enough protein may help prevent muscle loss. This is important because muscle loss can lead to a loss of mobility and independence. In a recent study, researchers tracked 2,000 adults ages  70-79 for 6 years. All could walk and climb stairs at the start. After 6 years, those who ate the least protein were 2 times as likely to have trouble climbing 10 stairs and walking one quarter of a mile, compared to those who consumed the most. Experts recommend an average woman consume between 40 to 50 grams of protein a day and an average man, 50 to 60 grams per day.
