Preventing Diverticulitis

Small pouches (diverticula) along the walls of the colon sometimes become inflamed or infected, causing a painful attack (diverticulitis). Some lifestyle changes may help reduce the risk of diverticulitis. Maintaining a healthy weight may be helpful. According to a recent study, obesity was linked to a 50% increased risk of diverticulitis. Regular exercise appears to also reduce the risk, as well as consuming a high-fiber diet. In one study, eating a high-fiber diet lowered risk of attacks by 40% when compared to a low-fiber diet. To add fiber to your diet, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans and legumes.
