Oranges May Help Prevent AMD

Recent research found that people who frequently consume oranges have a lower risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The 15-year study followed 2,000 adults over the age of 50. Researchers found that eating at least one orange a day lowered risk of AMD by 60% when compared to never eating oranges.  Researchers suggest that the beneficial effect is caused by phytonutrients in the orange called flavonoids. Other phytonutrients, lutein and zeaxanthin, have also been linked with lower risk of AMD. Sources include leafy green vegetables, orange peppers, kiwi and egg yolks.
