Regular exercise and a healthier diet may allow type-2 diabetes patients on blood-sugar-lowering prescriptions (but not insulin) to cut back on their meds. In a recent study of overweight people with diabetes, half of participants were assigned to an intensive intervention. The program consisted of 30 minutes of excercise 5-6 times a wee, 30 minutes of strength training 2-3 times a week, 10,000 steps a day and a weight-loss Mediteranean-style diet. The other half were given diabetes medical counseling and lifestyle advice. After a year, of the intensive group, 73% were able to cut back on their meds and half could eventually stop taking them altogether.
