Colon Cancer Screening

Regular screenings help protect against colon cancer. The American Cancer Society
recommends screening begin at age 50 or earlier if you are at high risk, such as having a
family history of colon cancer. Some screening options are a fecal occult blood test, fecal
immunuchemical test, flexible sigmoidoscopy, CT colonagraphy (a virtual colonoscopy),
or a colonoscopy. There is also an FDA-approved non-invasive at-home DNA stool test
(Cologuard), which looks for DNA changes and blood in your stool. A colonoscopy should
be performed if any of the other options yields a positive result. Talk with your doctor about
which is best for you and how often you need it.
