Toss out medications, prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) ones, that are past their expiration date or not in their original packaging. They may not be as potent as intended and may even change composition over time. Also, don’t keep unnecessary prescriptions around (especially pain meds) even if they are not expired; this can lead to misuse. Taking them to a pharmacy or police station drop-off box is the best way to dispose of expired or unwanted meds. This is safer than throwing them into the trash or flushing them down the toilet. Replenish common OTC meds such as pain relievers, fever reducers, allergy and cold meds and first-aid supplies.
