Blepharitis

Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids that involves the eyelash hair follicles and the edges of the eyelids. It can be triggered by overproduction of oil by the eyelid glands or by a bacterial infection. Symptoms may include red, itchy eyelids, crusting on eyelids or lashes, scaly skin around the eyes, excessive tearing and a burning sensation. To treat, try warm compresses with a clean washcloth. Lightly scrub eyelids at the base of the lashes with a mixture of water and a few drops of baby shampoo on a cotton swab. After rinsing, gently massage the lids with a warm washcloth. If this doesn’t help, contact your doctor.
